AAP Details Plan for Car Rationing in Delhi, Sunday Likely Open for All

NEW DELHI: The Delhi government detailed its ambitious plan to curb pollution through the odd-even number plate formula. Privately-owned cars with registration that ends with an odd number will be allowed on Monday, Wednesday and Friday while even-numbered will get Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday.

The Delhi government will only allow emergency vehicles like PCR vans, fire tenders and ambulances on the roads on all days in the National Capital Region.

Delhi Home Minister Satyendra Jain said that there is a need to take strict measures to clean the city’s toxic air.”Pollution level has gone up in winter in Delhi. Due to heavy smog, such a situation has emerged that people are being advised against going for exercise,” Mr Jain added.

Among other steps to curb the the pollution menace that Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal had outlined, the government’s ‘odd-even’ formula for cars has left Delhi divided in a debate. However, Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal yesterday said that the government would discontinue the move after 10 to 15 days if people faced problems.

Mr Jain said the government has also sought people’s suggestions on the government’s odd-even formula. and they can send their suggestions to [email protected].

Mr Jain also said that the government also will do something about rampant use of generators by companies in the national capital which also contribute to pollution. “We will soon discuss this issue in a meeting,” he added.

On December 4, the AAP government had come out with a plan of restricting private vehicles bearing odd and even registration numbers to alternate days which will be enforced from January 1.
