Bajaj unveils bike with INS Vikrant metal
Bajaj Auto on Monday unveiled a 150-cc bike named ‘V’ that contains metal sourced from India’s first aircraft carrier, INS Vikrant.
The motorcycle, targeted at the commuter segment, is expected to be priced a little over Rs. 60,000.
“The Bajaj V shall usher a new era in commuter motorcycling. Instead of INS Vikrant becoming a forgotten hero, we bought its scrap metal, melted it and gave it a new face,” Bajaj Auto President (Motorcycle Business) Eric Vas said at an event in the national capital.
The sale of the bikes, which will go into production on February 5, will commence from March. Bajaj Auto Managing Director Rajiv Bajaj, said initial production capacity would be 20,000 units a month. However, should the demand exceed that, “scaling capacity will not be an issue.”
About the pricing, he said, “V would be priced between Rs.60,000 and Rs.70,000… it is likely to closer to Rs.60,000 than Rs.70,000. We will announce the pricing details at the time when we start deliveries in March.”
INS Vikrant was commissioned as the first aircraft carrier of Indian Navy in 1961. After years of distinguished service, it was decommissioned in January 1997 and served as a museum till 2012. In November 2014, the aircraft carrier was dismantled and sold as scrap metal.
