Heat waves tolls 1100 lives in India

New Delhi: The extreme heat wave, which has swept many parts of the country, has claimed over 1100 lives across various states, with over 852 death being reported in Andhra Pradesh and Telangana alone.

The Hyderabad Meterological Centre has further warned that heat wave may continue on Wednesday.

Chinna Rajappa, who holds the home portfolio, has announced compensation of Rs 1 lakh each to the families of the victims.

The government had issued an alert to doctors to be ready to provide medical assistance to the heat wave-affected people, he said.

Coastal Andhra continued to reel under severe heat wave conditions. Jangamaheswara Puram in Guntur district sizzled at 47 degrees Celsius. Almost all deaths were reported during last six days.

Guntur district bore the brunt with 104 deaths, East Godavari accounted for 90 deaths, Visakhapatnam 84, Vijayanagaram 61, Prakasam 57, Nellore 39, Srikakulam 25, Chittoor 20, Kadapa 13, Anantapur 11 and Kurnool 8.

Meanwhile, the IMD has predicted that the southwest monsoon is likely to set over Kerala on May 30th with a model error of ± 4 days.

Besides Andhra Pradesh and Telangana, sweltering conditions persisted in Delhi, Maharashtra, Rajasthan, Uttar Pradesh, Punjab, Haryana, Madhya Pradesh, Odisha and West Bengal with temperature hovering around 45 degree celsius in most places in these states.

Odisha’s Special Relief Commissioner’s (SRC) office said there was no change in the sunstroke casualty figure even as the Revenue department received reports of 67 death cases allegedly due to heat-related incidents.

Meteorological Department had issued a “Red Box” warning for the state for Tuesday and Wednesday – meaning the maximum temperatures would remain above 45 degrees Celsius.

Heat wave conditions continued to sweep swathes of Punjab and Haryana, giving no respite to people as the maximum temperatures crossed few notches above normal at most places.

Karnal in Haryana recorded a maximum temperature of 44 degree Celsius on Tuesday.

Hisar sweltered at 43.5 degree C, one notch above normal while Bhiwani sizzled at 43.6 degree C.

Narnaul recorded 43 degree C and Ambala 41 degree C.

Heat wave conditions prevailed at isolated places in Uttar Pradesh as weather was dry over the state.

Normal life was affected in parts of desert state of Rajasthan where heatwave conditions copntinue to prevail in several areas forcing people to stay indoors.
