Andhra Pradesh police encounters with 20 red sandalwood smugglers in Chittoor

Hyderabad: The Andhra Pradesh police on Tuesday shot dead at least 20 red sandalwood smugglers in a major encounter in Chittoor district of the state.

According to reports, the encounter is still on in the Seshachalam forest of Chitoor and many others have sustained serious injuries due to heavy exchange of gunfire from both sides.

Initial reports suggest that a group of heavily armed smugglers attacked the cops during a combing operation, which resulted in severe retaliation from the police personnel.

Eighty red sandalwood smugglers were intercepted in the forest this morning.

The operation is being carried out jointly by Chitoor forest officials and the local police.
