BJP Lawmaker’s Controversial Remarks In Lok Sabha Leave Congress Fuming

NEW DELHI: When the Lok Sabha meets on Thursday, the Congress will demand the suspension of BJP lawmaker from Uttar Pradesh, Virender Singh, for making “derogatory and personal remarks” against the party’s leadership, and using unparliamentary language in the House today.

Speaking during the discussion on drought, the BJP member who represents Bhadoi lashed out at the Congress for obstructing Lok Sabha proceedings and said the party only wants the “fair skinned” to occupy the Prime Minister’s office.

“I want to tell Rahul and Scindia that these rulers are born not just from queens but also from women who do menial jobs,” said Singh.

He was targeting Rahul Gandhi — who was not present at that time — and Jyotiraditya Scindia who was leading the Congress sloganeering in the well of the House.

“These people talk about farmer’s interest when they follow feudal practices even now. A minister once told me when you call Scindia, his staff says “Maharaj” is still sleeping. I want to tell him the days of zamindari are over,” thundered Singh.

Singh’s outburst against the Congress came after they had forced repeated adjournments during a discussion on drought, by trying to get on to the Speaker’s podium when Deputy Speaker M Thambidurai was in the chair.

Unlike the Rajya Sabha, where Congress’ numerical majority ensured quick disruptions, the Lok Sabha functioned amid the din. The House even managed to pass an economic bill.

So, when Lok Sabha finally started discussing drought, an exhausted team of protesting Congress lawmakers, in a final bid, rushed towards the Deputy Speaker.

Two adjournments later, when the Lok Sabha started functioning, Mr Singh began attacking the Congress but his words were barely audible in the din the protesting lawmakers had created. The response from the Congress was delayed. When Mr Scindia finally heard what was being said, he complained to the chair: “He is going on saying things, sir!”

Mr Thambidurai assured the Congress members that “objectionable words and references would be deleted.” When it didn’t calm tempers, the Deputy Speaker finally adjourned the House for the day. The Congress lawmakers will also demand Mr Singh remarks be expunged.
