Demonetisation: Supreme Court refuses to stay proceedings, to transfer all cases to one court

The Supreme Court Wednesday refused to stay proceedings in cases filed in various courts across the country against the Centre’s move to scrap old Rs 500 and Rs 1000 notes. It, however, agreed to transfer all pending cases on demonetisation to a single court. Earlier, Attorney General Mukul Rohatgi, in his plea before the apex court, requested a blanket order to stay proceedings in PILs filed in various courts.

The Modi government’s move to declare old high currency tender illegal caused considerable amount of hardship to the common man as queues outside banks and ATMs spilled onto the roads. Within days of announcing the move, RBI relaxed withdrawal norms for those celebrating weddings and farmers. Prime Minister Narendra Modi has been constantly reviewing the policy changes.

He even sought the public’s opinion on the move through an app survey. Speaking at an event in Delhi on Tuesday, Modi expressed shock over a few public figures openly supporting black money. The issue has, however, united the Opposition, both inside and outside the parliament. House proceedings were repeatedly disrupted, with Opposition seeking PM Modi’s participation in the discussion over demonetisation.
