IMD: Thunderstorm, drizzling likely on May 23, 24; some relief from Heat

New Delhi: As the country suffers the severest heat wave this year, there is finally some respite expected in a few days from the soaring temperature. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) on Saturday stated that there is drop in temperature across several states due to easterly winds.

Speaking to ANI, IMD Director BP Yadav said, “There is gradual fall in temperature in the last two days, earlier in Delhi it had crossed 45 °C and 50 °C in Rajasthan.”

“There is drop in temperature in Punjab, Haryana, Rajasthan, Gujarat, Delhi/NCR, UP, MP due to easterly winds,” he added.

Several parts of the country are reeling under intense heat while the MeT department has predicted that the onset of monsoon will get delayed by six days.

“Presently, there is no heat wave in Punjab, Delhi NCR areas but continues to prevail in Rajasthan, temperature is 48°C there. From 50°C & 51°C, temperature has now come down to 48°C in Rajasthan. Heat wave continues in West MP,” said Yadav.

Meanwhile, conditions were favourable for further advance of southwest monsoon into some parts of South Bay of Bengal, Andaman Islands and remaining parts of North Andaman Sea during the next 48 hours, the IMD said.

“Expecting a western disturbance on May 23rd,24th with dust storm, thunderstorm and drizzling,” he said.

Southwest monsoon hit the Andaman and Nicobar Islands two days before its normal date but a cyclone in Bay of Bengal is likely to “weaken” its progress which will result in delay of its onset in Kerala, it added.
