Lalit Modi case: Government will go by rule book, says Arun Jaitley

New Delhi:Union Finance Minister and Bharatiya Janata Party leader Arun Jaitley on Wednesday defended his government, saying that the administration will play by the rulebook and make sure absolute standards of probity are maintained.

While addressing a press conference, Jaitley said that his government has done no wrong and there is no question of being on the back foot in the case.

Former IPL commissioner Lalit Modi on Sunday had trained his gun at Jaitley for his links with former BCCI chief N Srinivasan and the DDCA scam.

Despite levelling allegations against several politicians and media barons, Modi’s main target, as he admitted, was Jaitley.

The controversial cricket administrator questioned Jaitley for backing the ICC chairman despite overwhelming evidence pointing towards his conflict of interest in the BCCI and IPL.

The ‘Lalitgate’ episode has brought the ruling BJP in the line of Opposition’s fire.

The help extended to Lalit Modi by External Affairs Minister Sushma Swaraj and Rajasthan Chief Minister Vasundhara Raje has put the BJP in dock, with the opposition gunning for the heads of both the senior leaders.

The issue has snowballed into a major political storm for the Narendra Modi government even though BJP has defended both the leaders.

Swaraj and Raje have been facing flak for helping Lalit Modi in procuring travel documents in the UK, a country which he has made his home to avoid legal processes in India.

Raje is facing allegations of giving a secret testimony supporting Lalit Modi’s immigration plea in the UK. Her son, Dushyant Singh, has also been accused of receiving money in illicit transactions from Lalit Modi.

Further, External Affairs Minister Sushma Swaraj has admitted to helping Lalit Modi secure travel documents in the UK.

Modi, 49, travelled to London in 2010 after the IPL became embroiled in allegations of match-fixing and illegal betting.
