PM Modi to flag off his Dream project ‘Digital India’ initiative today

The launch is expected to be attended by nearly 10,000 guests including top business leaders RIL Chairman Mukesh Ambani, Tata Group CEO Cyrus Mistry, Wipro chief Azim Premji among others.

Digital India is a plan to connect the entire country through broadband by 2019. The plan has been initiated and the national fibre network is already working on laying the fibre for this project. 250000 gram panchayats are to be connected through optic fibre.

There will be WiFi at shcools, universities and public wifi hotspots. The aim of the project is to deliver government services to the citizens directly. The government also wants to ensure smartphones in the hand of every citizen by 2019. The cost is likely to be nearly Rs 1 lakh crore to 1.3 lakh crore.

The challenges that the project faces is that there is no fibre network in remote villages, so it needs to lay about 30,000 km of fibre per month. However, experts do not see it happening anytime soon. Also with high spectrum costs, private telecom companies might stay away from investing in rural areas and also making telecom services cheaper making it the only way people will connect through Digital India.
