Vyapam: CBI registers case in medico’s death

The Central Bureau of Investigation team probing the Vyapam scam on Friday registered five more cases, including one related to the alleged murder of medical student Namrata Damor.

The agency has also instituted a preliminary enquiry into the mysterious death of TV Today group journalist Akshay Singh.

The first case has been registered on allegations that 19-year-old Damor, also an accused in the scam, was murdered in January 2012. Her body was found near rail tracks in Ujjain under mysterious circumstances.

The CBI team, which on Friday registered a case related to the death of medico Namrata Damor in the Vyapam scam investigation, registered four more cases.

The second one relates to the allegations of illegalities in the Madhya Pradesh pre-medical test conducted in 2010, whereas the third one, involving 11 accused persons, pertains to the examination conducted by Vyapam the same year.

The agency has also taken over the investigation into alleged illegalities in the Police Constable Recruitment examination held in 2013, in which 18 persons have been named; and the fifth one relates to the suspected involvement of over two dozen people in impersonation and cheating in the 2009 pre-medical entrance test.

Stating that the agency will submit a status report to the Supreme Court on the Vyapam scam cases, CBI Director Anil Sinha told reporters: “Our investigations will be foolproof. The probe will be conducted with utmost sincerity and to the best of our capability.”

The Madhya Pradesh police initially registered a murder case, but then closed the investigations stating that it was a “death by accident.” However, her post-mortem report revealed that she had died because of “violent asphyxia as a result of smothering.”

The CBI has also taken over the probe into the journalist’s death.

Madhya Pradesh Backward Class Commission member and BJP leader Gulab Singh Kirar, who is named as an accused along with his son in the Vyapam scam, has been suspended by the party following registration of a fresh FIRagainst him by the CBI.

The probe agency (Gwalior STF) had registered a case against Mr. Kirar and his son about eight months back.
