Dipa Karmakar makes history at 2016 Rio Olympics
Rio De Janeiro: India’s lone gymnast at the 2016 Rio Olympics, Dipa Karmakar made history on Monday after qualifying for the finals of the Vault apparatus.
The Tripura-girl, who became India’s first woman gymnast to qualify for the Olympics, managed to perform her much-appreciated ‘Produnova’ vault cleanly to secure 14.850 points after two attempts.
Dipa secured 7.000 on difficulty and 8.1 on execution in her first attempt. Her score for difficulty was a tad lower at 6.000 in the second attempt. She finished eighth in the Vault individual round.
She landed low on her Produnova vault in the first attempt, while her second vault was a Tsuk double full twist with step to the side.
However, it was American star Simone Biles who stole the show at the the HSBC Arena, with a stunning show of perfection. The 19-year-old scored 16.00 and 16.100 for a mean score of 16.050 to top the list of eight qualifiers for Sunday’s apparatus final.
North Korea’s Hong Un Jong was second with a score of 15.683. Swiss Steingruber Giulia, Maria Paseka of Russia — who won bronze at London, Chusovitina Oksana of Uzbekistan, Shallon Olson of Canada and Wang Yan of China are ahead of Karmakar in the table.
