Vivo X5 Pro review: Beautifully designed, highly priced

The thing about custom Android skins is that they either offer you that little extra over the base experience or end up ruining the UI completely. With Android being the dominant force in the smartphone market, a lot of new players have carved their way in with custom user interfaces to offer users something different without having them compromise on the way they have been using their smartphones for so long.

Vivo is one such manufacturer which has brought to the Indian market its Android smartphones layered with the Funtouch OS. Those who are familiar with Apple’s iOS interface are bound to feel impressed with the Funtouch OS that powers Vivo’s latest X5 Pro – the mid-range Android smartphone we review this week.

Those who are familiar with Apple’s iOS interface are bound to feel impressed with the Funtouch OS that powers Vivo’s latest X5 Pro.

One of the best things about Vivo X5 Pro is that it falls in the category of smartphones which offer you a little extra with Android by giving you an iOS-like experience at a relatively affordable price tag. The Vivo X5 Pro doesn’t borrow only the UI experience from iOS, but even in terms of outer appearance, the phone has similarities to the Apple device with visible antenna bands on the edges of the device and loudspeaker grill at the bottom.
The unibody phone has a 5.2-inch Super AMOLED HD display with narrow side bezels and the sheer slim design of the phone makes single hand operation fairly easy. Vivo has placed all the controllers and SIM/ memory card slots on the right, keeping the left free of distractions. The front panel has the standard Android virtual keypad in the lower end while the top features the front snapper and speaker with Vivo logo in left in subtle silver. A larger vertical logo sits on the rear of the device.

With its 1.5GHz octa-core Qualcomm Snapdragon 615 and 2GB RAM, the phone seems a little behind when competitors are pumping more RAM into lesser priced models. Nonetheless, the phone did not lag or had unexpected app crashes during our review period.

The X5 Pro comes with a decent camera configuration of 13 megapixel with flash at the rear and 8 megapixel in the front. The one-tap capture feature allows you flexible yet quick functionality. The sound output on the other hand is through a single speaker despite having two grills that makes audio played on loudspeaker only sufficient in restricted and small room environments.

One of the biggest disappointments with the Rs 27,967 phone is its insufficient battery. At 2450mAh, the juice burns up fast with prolonged usage. It seems Vivo paid more attention to build an iPhone lookalike but overlooked other elements including the crucial battery capacity.

For a price that hefty, the phone is bound to get a thumbs down in an affordability ruled market. Undoubtedly, the phone is slim and beautiful to look at but as they say, looks are deceptive; the phone’s core elements are slightly disappointing. On the brighter side, the phone is dual SIM, supports OTG, has a decent camera and offers memory expansion choice to up to 128 GB over the base 16 GB.
