Markets Close At Record Highs,Sensex at 31,332.56 & Nifty Settles Above 9,650
The stock markets closed at record highs in today’s session led by gains in ITC, HDFC, Hero MotoCorp, HDFC Bank and Cipla. The Sensex rose 136 points to close at an all-time high of 31,273 and Nifty jumped 37 points to settle above 9,650 for first time. For most part of the day, the Sensex and Nifty traded firmly higher in the opening deals, the Sensex nearly 200 points to hit all-time high of 31,332.56 and Nifty touched record high of 9,673.50.
Buying was visible across the sectors barring a few metal, oil & gas and capital goods shares which came under a mild profit booking. Pharma, realty, consumer durables, auto and power shares witnessed buying with the respective indices up 0.4-1.2 per cent each.
The broader markets ended in-line with the benchmark indices. The BSE Mid-cap index jumped 0.7 per cent and the small-cap index advanced 0.5 per cent.
From the Nifty basket of shares, 30 ended higher while 20 closed lower. Hero MotoCorp, Cipla, Yes Bank, Adani Ports, Aurobindo Pharma, IndusInd Bank and Wipro were also among the gainers. On the other hand, GAIL India, BPCL, Indiabulls Housing Finance, Tata Steel, Vedanta and ACC were among the losers.
The overall market breadth was marginally positive as 1,462 shares ended higher while 1,224 closed lower on the BSE.
Here are the highlights of today’s session:
3:17 pm: BPCL was the top Nifty loser, down 1.88 per cent at Rs. 725. GAIL India, Indiabulls Housing Finance, HUL, Vedanta, Tata Steel and ACC were also among the losers.
2:47 pm: Real estate shares were witnessing buying interest. The BSE Realty index was up 1.3 per cent; Oberoi Realty was the top gainer from this space, up 5.4 per cent at Rs. 390. Godrej Properties, Phoenix Ltd, Unitech, Sobha and Prestige were also among the gainers.
1:30 pm: From the Nifty basket of shares, 33 were advancing while 18 were declining. Cipla was the top Nifty gainer, up 3 per cent at Rs. 532. Hero MotoCorp, Bharti Airtel, Adani Ports, Yes Bank, HDFC and Coal India were also among the gainers.
1:18 pm: The overall market breadth was positive as 1,457 shares were advancing while 1,053 were declining on the BSE.
1:04 pm: Pharma shares gain for fourth day in a row. The BSE Healthcare index jumps 1.15 per cent; Morepen Labs, Cadila Healthcare, Indoco Remidies, Cipla, RPG Lifesciences and Natco Pharma were among the gainers.
12:10 pm: GMR Infrastructure shares surge 18 per cent to hit intraday high of Rs. 17.65 after the company’s debt fell to Rs. 19,856 crore in FY 16-17 from Rs. 37,480 crore during the previous financial year.
11:54 am: Pioneer Distilleries was the top small-cap gainer, up 20 per cent at Rs. 165.80. Gammon Infrastructure, BS Ltd, GVK Power & Infrastructure, Visagar Polytex, Lovable Lingerie, RPP Infra Projects and Nandan Denim were also among the gainer from the small-cap space.
11:40 am: Pharma shares were witnessing buying interest. The Nifty Pharma index was up 1.2 per cent; Cipla, Dr Reddy’s Labs, Torrent Pharma, Lupin, Glaxo, Piramal Enterprises and Morepen Labs were among the gainers.
11:31 am: Banking shares were trading on a flat note. The BSE Bankex was up 0.15 per cent; IndusInd Bank, HDFC Bank, Punjab National Bank, State Bank of India, Kotak Mahindra Bank and Axis Bank were among the gainers from this space.
11:24 am: The overall market breadth was marginally positive as 1,379 shares were advancing while 928 were declining on the BSE.
11:12 am: The stock markets came off the record highs on the back of profit booking in metal and oil & gas shares. The Sensex was up 142 points at 31,280 and Nifty was at 9,652, up 36 points.
10:37 am: Metal and oil & gas shares were witnessing selling pressure on account of profit-booking. Tata Steel, Vedanta, NALCO, Hindalco, Hindustan Zinc and JSW Steel were among the laggards.
10:08 am: Cadila Healthcare shares jump 7.2 per cent to hit intraday high of Rs. 504.80 after the company informed stock exchanges that Zydus Cdila received the final approval from USFDA to market Levofloxacin Injection which will be produced at Moraiya facility in Ahmedabad. The company added, “This is significant as it marks the beginning of the approval process for filings made from the Moraiya manufacturing plant after successfully completing the USFDA audit from February 6th to 15th 2017 with zero 483 observations.”
9:41 am: TVS Motor Company was the top gainer from the mid-cap space, up 5 per cent at Rs. 560. Crompton Greaves, Bayer Cropscience, Max Financial Services, Jindal Steel, Biocon, Divi’s Labs, JSW Energy, Bajaj Finserv and Kansai Nerolac were also among the gainers from the mid-cap space, up 1.4-5.4 per cent each.
9:30 am: The broader markets were trading outperforming the benchmark indices. The BSE mid-cap and small-cap indices were up 0.6 per cent each.
9:25 am: From the Nifty basket of shares, 43 were trading higher while 8 were trading lower on the BSE. Adani Ports was the top Nifty gainer, up 2 per cent at Rs. 356. Eicher Motors, Lupin, Hero MotoCorp, Bharti Airtel, TCS, Aurobindo Pharma, Bosch and Cipla were also among the gainers. On the other hand, Bajaj Auto, Hindustan Unilever, Indiabulls Housing Finance, Power Grid and GAIL India were among the notable losers.
8:50 am: The Sensex and Nifty are set to open higher in trade today tracking gains on Nifty futures traded on the Singapore Exchange amid strong global cues. The Nifty futures traded on Singapore Exchange also known as the SGX Nifty was up 0.4 per cent or 40 points at 9,673. Meanwhile, other Asian stock markets edged up on Friday and the dollar bounced from recent lows as upbeat data on US manufacturing and employment and buoyant European factory growth boosted investor optimism. Japan’s Nikkei rallied 1.6 per cent, Taiwan Weighted was up 0.5 per cent and South Korea’s KOSPI jumped 0.7 per cent.
Back home, foreign institutional investors sold shares worth Rs. 517 crore on Thursday while domestic institutional investors bought shares worth Rs. 172 crore.

Shares of auto makers such as Hero MotoCorp, Bajaj Auto TVS Motor and Mahindra & Mahindra will be in focus today as they may react to their sales figures for the month of May.
Tata Motors’ Jaguar Land Rover registered strong sales growth in US. JLR collectively sold 8,106 units in May registering growth of 14 per cent. Jaguar sales rose 44 per cent and Land Rover sales jumped 0.9 per cent year on year.
