Prem Ratan Dhan Payo runs into trouble with the Censors

While films have a tough time dealing with the Censor Board of Film Certification over issues of violence and risque content, Sooraj Barjatya’s Prem Ratan Dhan Payo has run into trouble with the Board for an entirely different reason.

The film is standard Rajshri fare with heavy doses of family drama thrown in for good measure and it sure should have been the last film to have problems with certification. However, the reason for the same seems quite bizzare. Apparently, the film is also being dubbed in Tamil and Telugu languages to maximise profits in minimum time.

Now, for the film to release in other languages, a new title also has to be provided but the title seems to be the bone of contention in this case. According to a report on Indiatoday.in, the film was going to be called Prem Leela in Telugu but the Board has objected that the title is misleading and doesn’t convey the gist of the film. Apparently, the name of the Telugu version does not adhere to censor laws for dubbed films because it bears no resemblance to the original title Prem Ratan Dhan Payo.

While it is not yet clear what the film’s reworked title in Telugu will be, the decision to change the title at such a late stage could affect business in the Telugu market. However, this won’t affect the film’s nationwide collections. Rajshri Films, producers of PRDP, will now have to apply for a new title and till then, the Telugu version will not be certified by the censors.
