Cops keep eye on Dawood nephew’s lavish wedding bash

MUMBAI: The family of India’s most wanted got together for a lavish function in Mumbai on Friday evening. Dawood Ibrahim’s nephew Zunaid Tungekar — son of the gangster’s younger sister Farzana — threw an extravagant wedding reception party at the Tulip Star hotel in Juhu.

Farzana lives in Mazgaon and Bandra with her husband, who is in the construction business. Zunaid is her elder son who returned from Dubai last year to help his father with the business.

Sources said Zunaid’s ‘nikah’ or wedding took place in Pen in Raigad district on Tuesday as the girl is from there, and the wedding reception, called the ‘walima-e-daawat,’ was kept for Friday.

At least a dozen sleuths from the crime branch of Mumbai police and the Anti-Terrorism Squad (ATS) kept a watch on the proceedings to see if any underworld elements came in, sources said.

While Dawood’s younger brother Iqbal Kaskar was not seen in the crowd, his Dubai-based sister Zaitoon and her husband Hamid Antuley were spotted sitting in the front row, sources said.

Iqbal had not turned up till 10.30pm. Sources said he has been taking precautions since the attempt on his life outside Pakmodia Street in 2011 by Chhota Rajan’s men.

Sources said the gangster’s family saw a celebration after a lull of nine months due to the death of Dawood’s elder sister Haseena Parkar in July last year. They said there had hardly been any celebration in the family since the 2005 wedding of Haseena Parkar’s only son Danish at Anjuman-e-Islam high school in Mumbai. Danish died in a road accident in 2007.

Dawood aides Tariq Parveen, Haji Amin, Salim Fruit and Chhota Shakeel’s brother-in-law Shahid were also not seen at the gathering. The sources said they may have stayed away to evade police scrutiny.

A Tulip Star staffer confirmed on condition of anonymity that the reception party in the Tungekar family had taken place but refused to divulge details.
