Five arrested for credit card fraud in Bengaluru
A gang of five persons were arrested by the Bengaluru police for allegedly using stolen credit card data of foreign nationals to clone credit cards to siphon out cash from the accounts of the unsuspecting victims.
The Upparpet police in Bengaluru recovered Rs. 5.8 lakh in cash and data capturing machines worth Rs. 25 lakh from the gang. The accused have been identified as Jayakumar, 43, and his associates, Irfan Ahmed, 32, Waseem Sharief, 26, Tajammul Ahmed, 37 and Raghavendra, 33, all residents of Bengaluru.
The police said that the accused through their contacts in Mumbai, Jaipur, Hyderabad and Chennai purchased data stolen from credit card holders in the US and other European countries. The gang used the data to clone own credit cards using the electronic data capturing machine. The racket was discovered after a police team raided a shop own based on a tip off. The main accused Jayakumar had opened a shop called City Centre Roland Magic in central Bengaluru to act as a front for his illegal activities, police said. The gang was however mainly engaged in purchasing stolen credit card data to swipe funds from the accounts of victims in foreign countries. Police said that the gang had been active in the city since 2009. The kingpin Jayakumar is a habitual offender and has similar cases against him in the Jayanagar, Sampigehalli, and Cottonpet police stations in Bengaluru and also in Tamil Nadu, police said.
