FTII students end hunger strike, meeting with govt on Tuesday

New Delhi: Students of the Film and Television Institute of India (FTII), who were on hunger strike demanding removal of Gajendra Chauhan from the post of chairman, ended it on Sunday shortly after receiving letter by the I&B Ministry.

A meeting between the government and the students is likely to take place on September 29, according to ANI.

The FTII students’ Association (FSA) leader Vikas Urs told ANI, “We are calling off hunger strike after I&B Ministry sent the letter. However, our strike will continue.”

The agitating FTII students had on Friday said they would withdraw their hunger strike to pave way for a dialogue with the government if the I&B Ministry confirmed a date for talks to resolve their demands including removal of actor Gajendra Chauhan from the institute’s chairmanship.

The FSA, backed by some film personalities and alumni, has questioned the credentials of Chauhan to head the FTII, demanding his removal as its chairman along with some other members from the FTII Society.

The students have been on a relay hunger strike in batches of three as part of intensification of their agitation.
