Govt ban on mobile internet for law and order not violation of freedom of speech: Supreme Court
New Delhi: The Supreme Court on Friday upheld that state authorities imposing a limited ban on internet to manage law and order is not akin to limiting citizen’s fundamental right to free speech.
The Chief Justice of India remarked while hearing a case filed by a student-social media activist on Gujarat government’s imposition of ban on internet accessibility during Patiadar agitation.
To check rumors and uphold law and order during the agitation led by Hardik Patel, the state government had imposed a limited ban on mobile in different cities.
Chief Justice of India dismissed the appeal of the student activist and remarked “It becomes very necessary sometimes for law and order”.
