Last date for filing I-T returns extended till Oct 31

CHENNAI: The income tax department has extended the last date for filing tax returns for the assessment year 2015-16 till October 31.

Though August 31 was said to be the last date, it was extended till September 30 and now again the date has been extended.

In a statement, Union ministry of finance said, “The issue of extension of last date for e-filing returns of income and audit reports under section 44AB due by September 30 has been a subject matter of litigation in various high courts across the country. While some high courts have ruled in favour of the extension of due date, some others have ruled otherwise.”

“In order to avoid discrimination between taxpayers residing in different jurisdictions and to be fair to all, and also in view of paucity of time to approach the Supreme Court by way of special leave petition (SLP), the government has decided that across the country, all the returns of income and audit reports Section 44AB can now be filed till October 31,” said the statement.
