No ban on Whatsapp: Supreme Court

Plea stated that complete encryption enabled messages sent by users would stonewall police investigations.

The Supreme Court on Wednesday dismissed a petition seeking a complete ban on online messaging platform WhatsApp.

A Bench led by Chief Justice of India T.S. Thakur asked RTI activist from Gurgaon, Sudhir Yadav, to instead move the government with his plea that state that complete encryption enabled messages sent by users would stonewall police investigations, especially those in terror cases.

The petition was inspired after WhatsApp enabled messages with the 256-bit encryption, which cannot be hacked.

Even WhatsApp does not have the decryption keys to break the code and would not be able to help the government in national interest, Mr. Yadav had pleaded.
