Raksha Bandhan mahurat after 1.50pm today

Mumbai: Saturday’s full moon of Shravan Purnima brings the festival of Raksha Bandhan that embodies the love between brother and sister. Astrologers have this year advised women to perform the ceremony after 1.50pm given the celestial alignment.

“Traditionally, sisters tie the thread on their brothers’ wrists in the morning. However, this year the inauspicious period of Bhadra prevails during the first half of Purnima tithi. One should wait for Bhadra to end at 1.50pm before starting any auspicious work. The ceremony may be conducted until 8.58pm,” the website DrikPanchang.com stated.

As always, silken threads in auspicious colours like red, saffron and yellow are a favourite with women. The stationery company, Camlin, has devised an online app where people can prepare virtual rakhis using crayons and water colours on computers or cell phones and post the images online.

Given the exigencies of modern urban living, few brothers are able to make this trip to their sisters’ homes this day each year. Khar homemaker Sapna Raheja said, “This year is special because my brother will visit, as Raksha Bandhan falls on the weekend holiday of Saturday. There is no particular sweetmeat associated with the festival. We either prepare kaju mithai at home or order the fragrant sev burfi from small businesswomen from Kalyan-Ulhasnagar who bring traditional delicacies to enclaves like Bandra-Khar and Andheri Lokhandwala.”

The Koli community will perform the ceremonial Nariyal Purnima puja in their boats as they prepare to resume fishing after the monsoon ban.
