SC asks CBI to speed up Vyapam probe
Making it clear that it will not tolerate any complacency to creep into the Vyapam scam probe, the Supreme Court on Friday asked the CBI to act fast, chalk out a road map and report back by July 31.
A Bench led by Chief Justice of India H.L. Dattu displayed a sense of urgency when it asked the agency to give a deadline by which it would fully take over the Vyapam investigation and appoint lawyers for the criminal trials ahead.
The Supreme Court said it wanted the CBI to give a clear response on whether the apex court should monitor the probe itself or set up another body.
Meanwhile, it asked the Madhya Pradesh government to continue filing charge sheets in those cases where investigation was over so that the momentum would not be lost.
With this, the court had sent a clear signal that its role in getting to the bottom of the Vyapam scam would not end merely by passing an order transferring the investigation to the CBI.
Noting that it will not allow even one more death, the Supreme Court transferred all criminal and death cases linked to the Vyapam scam to the Central Bureau of Investigation for a “fair and impartial” probe.
The Supreme Court has ordered a CBI probe into the multi-crore cash-for-jobs scam in the Madhya Pradesh Professional Examination Board that has resulted in unexplained deaths of key accused and witnesses.
