Supreme Court receives anonymous threat letter, security tightened

New Delhi: The security in and around the Supreme Court complex has been tightened after an anonymous letter threatening to blow up the highest court was received and forwarded to Delhi Police.

A report published in the Hindustan Times, Tuesday, said the threatening email was received by a person whose identity was withheld for security reasons. The letter was immediately forwarded to Delhi Police, which in no time tightened the security cover in and around the Supreme Court complex on Tilak Marg.

As per the report, the Union Home Ministry and intelligence agencies were also informed about the threatening email.

Subsequently, all agencies responsible for securing the court complex have been asked to remain alert.

On August 5, Supreme Court Justice Dipak Misra who had rejected Mumbai blasts convict Yakub Memon’s mercy plea had received an anonymous threatening letter.

Security outside his residence was quickly beefed up after the threat letter was sent to his office at the Supreme Court recently.

Teams from the Delhi Police Special Cell and the Intelligence Bureau were directed to investigate the matter.

A two-tier security system was put in place by the Delhi Police outside the judge’s Tughlaq road residence. Armed guards were also put outside the residences of the other judges.

The letter threatened that justice Misra will be killed even if he remains under security cover.
