Unseasonal Rain Lashes North India; Jammu-Srinagar Highway Shut Due to Heavy Snow

Rain accompanied by cold winds lashed Delhi and its adjoining areas for the second consecutive day, resulting in the mercury plummeting by several notches. There was heavy rain and hailstorm in most parts of the country on Sunday, with the higher reaches in the North also experiencing heavy snowfall.

Police said the Jammu-Srinagar highway has been closed due to heavy snowfall and landslides, reports the Press Trust of India.The Met department has predicted moderate rainfall today across the country, including several parts of North India. More rain has been forecast in Delhi today with fog expected in the evening.

The sudden change in weather has been caused by western disturbances, according to the India Meteorological Department (IMD).

“Almost the entire country from the Southern peninsula, parts of Maharashtra, Rajasthan, Delhi and even Bangalore has witnessed rain. This is the rainiest day of the winter season,” said GP Sharma, vice president of Skymet, a private weather forecasting agency.

In Jammu and Kashmir, while the upper reaches of the Valley received snowfall, the plains were lashed by intermittent rains with Qazigund in south Kashmir receiving 14.4 mm rainfall.Wintry conditions also prevailed in most parts of Himachal Pradesh and Uttarakhand, with the heavy snowfall in several areas.

Intermittent rains affected normal life and highway traffic in Rajasthan as Bikaner recorded a maximum rainfall of 21 mm on Sunday, a MeT Deparment report said. Light to moderate rain or thundershowers also occurred at a few places in Uttar Pradesh in the last 24 hours.

Two people including a woman died of lightning and electrocution while crops suffered heavy damage as the untimely rain lashed the Amravati district in Maharashtra.
