BlackBerry’s introduces Android-based Venice smartphone with a sliding keyboard

New Delhi: Android just got another suitor. Struggling smartphone manufacturer BlackBerry is reportedly launching its first-ever smartphone based on Google’s popular operating system in November.

In line with earlier speculations, show the device, dubbed BlackBerry Venice, with a sliding keyboard that has rectangular chiclet keys instead of the standard BlackBerry keyboard.

The images revealed by serial tipster Evan Blass also shows the device running Android apps, which essentially means the BlackBerry Venice could as well an official Google Android device and not merely run the OS. This is because getting the Google apps and services like Maps, Google+ or Google Drive, hardware partners have to license them from Google.

In a market dominated by iOS and Android, BlackBerry has been long struggling to sell its smartphones based on its own operating system.

Recently, the company’s chief John Chen defended BlackBerry’s phone business saying that BlackBerry phones are the entry point for customers into the company’s security business.
