Sushma Swaraj’s kidney transplant surgery at AIIMS successful

New Delhi: External Affairs Minister Sushma Swaraj on Saturday underwent a kidney transplant at the AIIMS in Delhi. As per the sources, the transplant procedure started at 8.30 am and ended at around 2.30 pm. The surgery, performed by AIIMS director MC Misra and Sub-Dean VK Bansal apart from a few other senior doctors, was successful.

She underwent the transplant surgery at the Cardio Thoracic Neurosciences centre of AIIMS.

Earlier, the team of doctors constituted for the surgery included Head of Endocrinology Nikhil Tandon, Head of Pulmonary Medicine Randeep Guleria, Chief of Cardio Thoracic and Head of Nephrology Sandeep Mahajan.

The possibility of having Swaraj`s daughter as a potential donor was turned down by the doctors as she too was diabetic and suffering from obesity.

Doctors said Swaraj was undergoing dialysis whenever required.

Swaraj, who has been in and out of the hospital for the past few months, was admitted to AIIMS on November 07 with failing kidneys.

On November 16, she tweeted that she was admitted to AIIMS because of kidney failure and was undergoing tests for transplantation.

The 64-year-old minister has been treated regularly for diabetes and has been on dialysis to flush out her kidneys for weeks.

AIIMS was flooded with offers to donate a kidney to the External Affairs Minister.
